COLOR: Color Schemes

Today the class continued working on the Color Schemes project. The painting above is a "work in progress" illustrating a monochromatic cool color scheme in green. In general these designs are most effective when a strong gradation is established.

TEXTURE: Actual, Simulated and Invented

Gianna Davy Last Friday the class made an image consisting of actual, simulated and invented textures. The objective was to explore traditional and experimental applications of painting and collage materials. Gianna's painting above illustrates torn pieces of paper glued and painted in the upper left corner, drawing into wet paint (center, right, top), stamping with plant forms (center, right, bottom), stenciling with tape in the lower left and various applications of paint from thick to thin just to name a few.

LINE DYNAMICS: Symmetry

Yesterday the class made symmetrical drawings within a "continuous field arrangement." The objective was to create the illusion of depth using line weight variations, shape and texture. Take note how the thickness of the line changes its location in space (i.e. thick lines advance, light lines recede). In addition, repeating lines to create texture simultaneously creates tonal variations. In the last hour of class, students began symmetrical compositions employing the Distal Cues. TEXTURE

Jessica Xiong-Cisneros Today's class began with a critique of the color schemes project followed by a lecture on Texture . Students made a painting exploring the elements of actual, simulated and invented textures . The goal was to create an image that stimulates a sense of touch as well as the visual. The actual texture of Jessica's painting has high points, low points, impasto and scumbled areas. The rest of the spaces primarily address invented textures evident in the checker board pattern and the striped areas.
